Unreal Tournament 2004
|
What are the best settings for a LAN game? Unreal Tournament 2004 has a knack for kicking people out of games half-way through a round. When hosting a game, please make sure your "Server Rules" match what I have marked here. This will obviously let people join with the least resistance. I would also recommend unplugging the internet from the network during a game if possible. Otherwise it will attempt to validate CD keys during the match. And it seems that even with legit keys, people get kicked. It's also a good idea to disable any firewall on the server machine.

I can't see my friend's game in the server list. Try connecting directly to his IP address. You may also want to disable your firewall, and any anti-virus, anit-spyware, etc... Take a look at the troubleshooting page for more help.

How can I connect directly to an IP? Open up the server browser, and either go to LAN or Internet (at the top) Right click anywhere, and select 'OpenIP'. Then simply enter the IP address and push ok.

What ports does Unreal Tournament 2004 use? TCP: 28902, 80 UDP: 7777-7778, 7787-7788

How can I see the framerate? To enable the framerate display, open up the console (default is ~). Type in "stat fps" with no quotation marks and push enter.

X-fi Driver Problems If you own an X-fi sound card, you obviously want to utilize what is has to offer. Creative released a custom patch for Unreal Tournament 2004 that not only updates the game to the latest version (3369), but modifies / updates all the sound files and the way they are played. It can be downloaded here. (This patch does not include the extra maps and vehicles that the mega-patch does. The mega-patch can be installed on top of this one though.) Upon installing this patch, everything should be all set up correctly and ready to go. When I did it however, I had NO AUDIO. I could only get audio to work if I went into the audio settings and put an 'x' in the 'System Driver' file. The reason this works is because instead of using the OpenAl32.dll file in your System32 directory that would utilize the X-fi card, it is using a standard OpenAl32.dll file that is installed into the game's directory. To fix this, I first un-installed the game (yes I know, it's a pain). I then went and made sure the game folder was completely gone. The default location is C:\UT2004. Next, I went into device manager (right click my computer, click 'manage', select device manager on the left) and removed the X-fi card from the system (click the + sign next to 'Sound, video and game controllers', right click on 'Creative SB X-Fi', select uninstall). After this, I manually deleted the OpenAL32.dll file in C:\Windows\System32. This is the file that UT2k4 is trying to use for the X-Fi patch. Making sure this file is gone will ensure that it is re-installed later. I then went into 'Add/Remove Programs' in the control panel (start > run > control panel> enter) and removed any X-fi entries here. One other note, please make sure if your motherboard has an integrated sound card to not only remove all the drivers for this, but to also disable the sound card itself in the BIOS. This ensures that no program will somehow be confused as to what audio device it is supposed to be using. Reboot the computer. When it turns on, it will try to install drivers for your sound card, but just say 'cancel'. We will be installing them ourselves in a minute. Next, I downloaded the latest X-fi driver from creative. When it was done downloading, I went ahead and installed the drivers. I also checked to make sure that a new OpenAL32.dll file was placed in C:\Windows\System32. After the driver was installed and I made sure the OpenAl32.dll file was in place, I went into the control panel again, and opened up 'Sounds and Audio Devices'. I then clicked on the 'Audio' tab, and made sure that 'Use only default devices' was checked. Also, for each 'Default device' listed, your X-Fi sound card should be selected. Push OK. Re-install Unreal Tournament 2004. Upon a successful install, run the game once to make sure you hear audio. Re-install the X-fi patch for Unreal Tournament 2004. Upon completion, try running the game. Check to make sure your audio settings are setup like this. If your audio settings are the same as the image above, and you hear audio, then it is working.

X-fi Commands Installing the X-fi patch enables some new console commands. You can enter these by pushing the tilde key. Changing these during gameplay won't instantly change the music / sound. A new level must be loaded. The commands are as follows: MUSICFILE option
WEAPONSFILE option
  ACCENTS option
